What’s the Real Value of Your Window Treatments?
You’ve probably heard that window treatments can protect your furniture, floors, and art from the sun. But you might be wondering, “By how much?” It’s not an exact science. But think of it this way: your windows let in damaging UV rays 24/7. This is especially true here in Southwest Florida, where we have harsh, year-round sun. These rays slowly fade and ruin your home’s most precious items. Investing in the right window treatments can extend the life of your interior by anywhere from 2 to 25 times.
The secret to this wide range lies in the type and quality of the treatment. Here at SunCoast Blinds, we want to help you understand the power of different window treatments. This way, you can make the best choice for your home.

Understanding UV Protection: A Breakdown
We’ve broken down how long it takes for different window treatments to allow the same amount of sun damage as one year with a completely bare window.
High-End UV-Blocking Window Film
🕒 Estimated Time: 15 to 25 years
High-quality solar window films are the gold standard for sun protection. They are like an invisible shield. These films are specifically designed to block up to 99.9% of harmful UV rays while still letting in natural light. This dramatically slows down the fading and degradation of everything in your home. Because these films are always on your windows, they provide passive protection without any effort. Combining tinting for UV protection with another window treatment like screen shades or shutters is a great choice. The second layer can control light and privacy.
Cellular or Honeycomb Shades
🕒 Estimated Time: 5 to 10 years
Cellular shades are very effective at blocking UV rays when they are down. However, we don’t always recommend them at SunCoast Blinds. They completely block the view when in use. We find that our clients often leave them up and don’t use them as they should. Remember, a window treatment can’t protect your home if you don’t use it! We prefer other options that let you keep your view.

Drapes or Curtains with Lining
🕒 Estimated Time: 4 to 8 years
A drape’s effectiveness depends heavily on its fabric, weave, and lining. A heavy, tightly woven, and lined drapery offers substantial protection. But what about those light, airy sheer curtains you see everywhere? While they look beautiful, they provide minimal UV protection.
Plantation Shutters (Poly-Resin)
🕒 Estimated Time: 4 to 8 years
Plantation shutters provide excellent protection when their louvers are fully closed. At SunCoast Blinds, we specialize in high-quality poly-resin shutters. They are incredibly durable and resist moisture and warping. They also have built-in UV protection. This is a top-selling product for us because it is a “set-it-and-forget-it” solution. The shutters are always on the window, providing constant protection without any effort.

5% Screen Shades
🕒 Estimated Time: 3 to 7 years
This is a surprisingly effective and very popular option. The “5%” refers to the shade’s openness. It allows for a subtle, filtered view outside. But here’s the best part: high-quality screen shades are engineered to block a massive amount of UV radiation. They often block 90% to 95% of it. This incredible balance of view and protection is why they are a bestseller for us. Since you can still enjoy your view even when the shades are down, you will likely use them more. This is also why we motorize many of our screen shades. You can effortlessly use them with a button or a smart home command. We help you make a habit out of protecting your home.

Standard Blinds
🕒 Estimated Time: 2 to 5 years
Blinds are great at blocking direct sunlight when fully closed. However, they are generally less effective at blocking UV rays than fabric shades or films. Some UV radiation can still get through the slats. Also, the materials may not have specific UV-blocking properties.
The Cost of Doing Nothing
What is the real cost of leaving your windows completely exposed?
Think about your furniture, your floors, and your art. The sun’s UV rays are the number one cause of fading and damage to your home’s interior. Hardwood floors can turn yellow or gray in high-traffic areas, leaving permanent “shadows” where your rugs were. The beautiful colors on your sofa and pillows will start to look dull. And that expensive piece of art? Its vibrant pigments can be permanently altered, sometimes beyond repair.
Replacing or restoring these items is not cheap. Refinishing hardwood floors can cost thousands of dollars. Professional art restoration can be even more expensive. The cost of having to re-upholster a faded sofa or replace custom rugs far outweighs the investment in quality window treatments.
The Bottom Line: Your Habits Matter
No window treatment can eliminate sun damage. But most will significantly extend the life and color of your home’s interior. Remember, for any treatment that isn’t a permanent film, its effectiveness depends entirely on you. The best window treatment in the world is useless if you don’t use it! A little effort goes a long way in protecting your valuable possessions from the sun’s silent but destructive power.
