What are divider rails on shutters and when should you use them?

How do plantation shutters open and close

You’re on the journey to purchasing new window coverings for your home in Bonita Springs or Naples FL and quickly realize that you have a lot of decision-making in front of you. First, you need to find the perfect window treatment for your openings. But it doesn’t stop there. Once you find the right window covering, you need to decide on design- and functionality options for this product.  Plantation shutters are no different, in fact, the versatility of shutters means there are a lot of decisions to be made to create the perfect shutter for your specific need. In this post, we’re going to explore the option of adding a divider rail and what a divider rail actually is.

What is a Divider Rail?

A divider rail on plantation shutters is a horizontal stationary piece that divides the shutter panels into two, sometimes three separate sections. This allows the top and bottom to operate independently, giving you more control over light and privacy. For example, you can keep the top section of the shutter open for light while keeping the bottom section closed for privacy. The divider rail on our SunCoast Blinds poly-resin shutters is 2.5″ wide, compared to most of our competitor’s shutters which can vary anything from 2″-5″ wide depending on opening. Our smaller divider rail allows us to cause minimal interference with your gorgeous Florida view.

The positioning of the divider rail is most commonly (but not only) determined by the location of the window locks. In this way, the divider rail covers up an already existing rail in your window and doesn’t add any extra obstruction to your view. Another common placement of the divider rail is 1/3 up on the shutter in bedrooms. This allows you to let light in at the top, while still having full privacy.

Benefits of Adding a Divider Rail

1. Enhanced Light Control: With a divider rail, you can adjust the light entering your space without sacrificing your desire for privacy. It’s especially useful in rooms where natural light is desired but where privacy is also necessary, for example, bedrooms and bathrooms.

2. Aesthetic Appeal: Many homeowners find that divider rails add a decorative element to plantation shutters. Especially since it’s covering up the existing window lock in the window.

3. Versatile Functionality: Divider rails provide flexibility. Close off the top to avoid the harsh sunlight, while still seeing out from the bottom panel during the brightest hours of the day. Or close the bottom for privacy while allowing light in from the top. When it’s bedtime, you can easily close both sections for privacy and maximum light control.

4. Add strength to large panels: Divider rails allow us to manufacture large panels while still keeping the structural integrity of the shutter.

When Should You Consider a Divider Rail?

1. Window Size: If you have tall windows, a divider rail will help to provide structural strength. It allows for easier operation, less wobbly panels, and a shutter that will last for many years to come.  At SunCoast Blinds, all shutters over 60″ tall need a divider rail. Anything less than that, the divider rail is optional. Do mind, that small windows benefit from no divider rails for as little interference or “cluttering” of the window as possible.

2. Room Use: In spaces where you often have varied lighting needs—such as living rooms, dining rooms, or home offices—a divider rail can be particularly beneficial. It allows for adjustment based on activities like watching TV or reading.

3. Privacy Needs: If your windows are exposed to street traffic or neighbors, a divider rail can provide an excellent solution for maintaining privacy without completely blocking out light.

4. Design Preference: If you prefer to hide your existing window locks while adding a feature to your shutter. The divider rail option is for you.
