Why Sheer Shadings are the Perfect Choice for Southwest Florida

Living in paradise—from the white sands of Marco Island to the lush greens of Bonita Springs—comes with one major challenge: managing that intense Florida sunshine. At SunCoast Blinds, we are always looking for window treatments that balance high-end aesthetics with the practical needs of our coastal environment.

That is why we are proud to feature Alta Sheer Shadings.

Sheer shadings Bonita Springs

What are sheer shadings?

Sheer shadings are a sophisticated, highly engineered window treatment designed to offer the ultimate balance of light and privacy. At their core, they consist of soft fabric vanes suspended between two layers of sheer, knitted fabric. This unique “sandwich” design allows you to tilt the vanes open to enjoy a diffused view or close them for complete privacy. Because the fabric is 100% polyester, it is treated to resist dust and dirt while maintaining a delicate, high-end appearance.

This unique design transforms harsh, direct sunlight into a soft, beautiful glow that fills your room without the blinding glare. It’s the perfect way to enjoy a bright, airy home in Naples or Bonita Springs while keeping the atmosphere cool and inviting.

All of our sheer shading fabrics are GREENGUARD Gold Certified. This means they have been rigorously tested to meet strict indoor air quality standards, ensuring your home remains a safe and healthy sanctuary.

Protect Your Home from UV

Your home is likely filled with fine flooring, custom décor, and curated furniture. Constant exposure to UV rays through untreated windows can cause permanent fading. Our Sheer Shadings act as a shield, reflecting solar heat and providing superior UV protection. With the vanes in an open position, our sheer shading blocks 88% of all UV rays, and 99% while in the closed position.

Create Privacy from Neighbors

One of the most frequent requests we get from clients on Fort Myers Beach and in Bonita Springs is the ability to maintain privacy without feeling “closed in.”

Sheer shadings are available in two opacities: translucent vanes and light-dimming vanes.

Translucent vanes provide a moderate degree of privacy, with only shadows visible from the outside, while still allowing light to filter in.

However, light-dimming vanes are perfect for bedrooms or media rooms, as they dramatically reduce light and ensure that images, shapes, and people are not discernible from the exterior. Using light-dimming sheer shadings will block 70% of the light coming through. So it’s important not to confuse light-dimming with room darkening.

Choosing the right vane size

Selecting the appropriate vane size is a key design decision that affects both your view and the window’s scale. Generally, larger vanes offer a clearer view of the outside when open and are ideal for larger windows, while smaller vanes are mainly used for smaller windows.

Our sheer shadings are available in three sizes: 2”, 2.5” and 3” vanes. The rule when choosing your vane size is that the space between the vanes will be approximately half of the size of the vane. For example: a shade with 2” vanes has a 1” view-through when open, 2.5” vanes has a 1.25” openness and, the 3” vanes has a 1.5” view-through.

Understanding Vane Operation: The “Fully Lowered” Rule

It is important to understand how sheer shadings operate throughout their range of motion to ensure they meet your light and privacy expectations. These shadings are designed so that the vanes remain in a closed position while the unit is being raised or lowered. Specifically, the vanes will only tilt open once the shading has been lowered all the way to its full length. If you choose to leave the shading partially raised—such as halfway up the window—the vanes will stay closed, providing privacy but blocking the view-through. This operational design ensures the fabric remains protected and properly aligned as it travels into the headrail.

Operating Options for Sheer Shadings

Each operating system for Alta Sheer Shadings is designed with different lifestyles and safety needs in mind. Here is a breakdown of how these systems function:

  • Automation (Remote Control or App): This system uses motors—such as BLISS™ or Somfy®—to raise, lower, and tilt your shadings with the touch of a button. You can operate several window coverings using a handheld remote or a wall switch. When paired with a bridge, you can also control your shadings via a smartphone app, allowing for features like scheduling and remote access when you are away from home.
  • PowerWand: This is a budget-friendly motorized option that eliminates the need for a separate remote. A wand is attached to the shading, and you simply touch a button on the wand to lift or lower the treatment. It features a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and offers “touch and walk away” convenience.
  • Cordless Lift: To operate this system, you use your hand to push up on the bottom rail to raise the shading or pull it down to lower it. A clear plastic handle attached to the bottom rail controls the lifting, lowering, and tilting mechanisms. Because there are no dangling cords, it is an ideal choice for homes with children or pets.
  • Retractable Wand: This child-safe system uses a single wand to control all functions. With one click, the fabric panel drops and the vanes automatically open. To close the vanes or raise the entire shading, you just pull the wand straight down.
  • Continuous Cord Loop: This system features a cord that remains at a constant length, which you pull to position the shade exactly where you want it. A tensioner device keeps the loop secured to the window frame to enhance safety by eliminating dangling chains.
  • Tilt Only: While the standard sheer shading is designed to lift completely into the headrail, tilt-only operation refers to the core functionality where the vanes rotate to redirect sunlight and provide privacy. However, it is important to remember that for these products, the vanes can only tilt open once the shading is lowered all the way to the window sills.
